Tales from the Locker Room
World Class
Two Whitehead golfers established a Guinness World Record in 1974 by playing nine holes in seven different states in one day. They started in Jersey at 04.25am, went on to North Wales, then Chester in England, Turnberry in Scotland, Castletown on the Isle of Man, crossing to Dundalk before finishing on the last green of Warrenpoint at 10.20pm. Ted Wilson and Gerry Donaldson flew in Ted’s single engine Cessna, which he piloted.
Two-course Captain’s Day
Uniquely, the Captain’s Prize in 1975 was contested on two locations. The first nine holes were played on the old Bentra course, the second nine on the new Muldersleigh course.
Counting ~Sheep
During World War Two, the course was used to graze sheep, at the government’s request. The obligation was lifted in 1949, to the relief of members, as the flock had destroyed many of the newly planted tree saplings and had badly damaged the greens. They were also something of an inconvenience to the ordinary conduct of a round of golf.
